Project Title: Community Artivism in Resisting Extremist Ideologies
MAYE came with Community Artivism (Art and Activism) in Resisting Extremist Ideologies- CARE Project whose goal is to see young women, men, and communities resist extremist ideologies. At the same time, this project looks at using arts as a tool for social and economic change, answers the question of how can one transform arts into wealth while impacting lives. Care is a two years’ project to be implemented from June 2019 to May 2021.
Unlike the previous projects that mainly focused on youth with more priority to the boy child, CARE builds on giving more priority to young women so as to build an equal avenue and space in the fight against violent extremism. Women have always remained victims of violent extremism, paying a higher price, they have participated as spectators but CARE creates an enabling environment for their active participation as leaders, mentors and primary agents of change. CARE Project is aiming at empowering young women, men and communities to resist extremist ideologies, a goal that directly feeds into the Wajibu Wetu program outcome that focuses on Improving attitudes and behaviors of right holders and duty bearers for upholding and defending human rights, democratic culture and gender equality in Kenya to contribute to respect for and fulfillment of human rights, deepening democracy and realization of gender equality in Kenya which is the intended goal in the long run.
CARE Project forms a strategic fit with our organizational priority which primarily focuses on Peace Building and Conflict Management with the following specific objective; Increased youth and women participation in peacebuilding strengthen community resilience against violent extremism. The project also feeds into MAYE’s strategic focus number 2. Which purposes to promote Democracy and rights-based approach among youth and women for gender mainstreaming and decision making.
CARE project is overall in line with MAYE's mission, which is to spearhead a positive change of attitude among the youth, women and vulnerable children within the community through advocacy, creating linkages, enhancing capacities to increase access to opportunities for self-sufficiency and prosperity. It is furthermore building into a peaceful society in which all youths are rich in culture, talents and realize their full potential which is part of MAYE’s vision.
